Why we use College athletics data This source helps us understand college sports, including participation, staffing, financial aid, revenue, and spending.
Who took part Colleges report participation by sport and sex. A student playing two sports can appear twice.
Where the money went Athletics aid, recruiting, and operating expenses appear separately under federal reporting rules.
Coaches and team finances You can see coaching staff, coach pay, reported revenue, and expenses for the college or sport.

What to keep in mind
A college total is not a team total The college total covers the full athletics program. A sport total covers one category inside it.
Participation spots are not always unique students Someone who plays more than one sport can be counted in each sport.
Revenue is not profit The federal categories do not capture every accounting choice. A quick subtraction can mislead you. On its own
