Psychology Degrees and Career Pathways
A psychology bachelor’s degree connects to broad preparation, but four of six linked careers typically require graduate education.

A psychology bachelor’s degree provides broad preparation
“Psychology” is not one unique field record. The closest match is Psychology, General.
Clinical Psychology and Applied Psychology are narrower nearby fields. Their career mappings and degree requirements differ.
The official CIP 2020–SOC 2018 crosswalk links general psychology to six careers. These are preparation links, not observed graduate destinations.
Two linked careers typically accept a bachelor’s degree
- Social Science Research Assistants: $61,990 median annual pay in May 2025 and 4.4% projected growth during 2024–34.
- Managers, All Other: $141,900 median pay in May 2025 and 4.5% projected growth during 2024–34. This is a broad residual category.
The crosswalk does not establish that psychology graduates commonly become managers.
Four linked careers usually require graduate education
- Industrial-Organizational Psychologists: master’s degree; $193,950 median pay in May 2025; 6.3% projected growth during 2024–34.
- Clinical and Counseling Psychologists: doctoral or professional degree; $100,580 median pay; 11.2% projected growth.
- Psychologists, All Other: master’s degree; $110,840 median pay; 4.3% projected growth.
- Psychology Teachers, Postsecondary: doctoral or professional degree; $80,340 median pay; 3.6% projected growth.
These wages use the May 2025 BLS Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics release. Projections use the BLS 2024–34 release.
Reported degrees increased across four observations
General Psychology colleges reported 105,319 bachelor’s first majors for July 2019 through June 2020. They reported 112,343 for July 2022 through June 2023.
The chart uses four revised IPEDS releases, published November 2022 through December 2025.
These are sequential reported counts. The available records do not document a formal comparability assessment between releases.
Licensing changes the graduate-career boundary
Clinical and Counseling Psychologists had 134 published license records across 52 jurisdictions.
CareerOneStop updated that source on October 14, 2024. EduInsights retrieved it on August 20, 2026.
Those records do not prove that a bachelor’s program meets licensing requirements. Curriculum, board approval, and individual eligibility are outside the snapshot.
Observed AI use does not predict employment effects
For May–June 2026, observed Claude.ai shares were:
- Social Science Research Assistants: 0.14%.
- Industrial-Organizational Psychologists: 0.26%.
- Clinical and Counseling Psychologists: 0.74%.
These figures use the Anthropic Economic Index release dated June 26, 2026. They describe source-specific observed interactions.
They cannot determine job loss, worker replacement, or changes in BLS projections.
Important coverage gaps remain
The College Scorecard record provides broader bachelor’s-level psychology context. However, its dated release and outcome period are not exposed here. I therefore excluded its earnings figures.
The 2024 one-year ACS release lacks publishable, validated Psychology, General alignment results under the minimum-cell rule.
The 2023 NSCG release has the same limitation. Its publisher categories also lack validated CIP and occupation mappings for this question.
Consequently, ACS and NSCG cannot show where general psychology bachelor’s graduates work from this snapshot.
General psychology bachelor’s degrees reached 112,343 in 2023–24
Line chart with four revised IPEDS observations for General Psychology bachelor’s first-major degrees. Counts rise from 105,319 in 2020–21 to 112,343 in 2023–24. These are reported degree counts, not employment outcomes.
