Compare dental hygiene and dental assisting as education-to-career paths. Use IPEDS awards and trends, College Scorecard earnings, CIP–SOC, May 2025 wages, 2024–34 openings, state projections, Occupational Requirements Survey measures, and CareerOneStop licenses. Show how credential length, degree volume, pay, growth, and licensure differ. Create one chart and disclose coverage.

Dental hygiene offers higher pay; dental assisting offers faster entry and more openings

Dental hygiene typically requires an associate’s degree. Its linked occupation paid a $98,100 median annual wage in May 2025.

Dental assisting typically requires a postsecondary nondegree award. Its linked occupation paid $48,070 in May 2025.

The official crosswalk connects each field to its matching occupation. These links show preparation, not graduates’ destinations.

Dental assisting has shorter credentials and more awards

Colleges reported 16,103 dental assisting awards and 8,920 dental hygiene awards for 2024–25. These totals are provisional.

About 91% of dental assisting awards were certificates shorter than two years. Associate’s degrees represented about 9%.

Among dental hygiene awards, 68% were associate’s degrees and 28% were bachelor’s degrees in 2024–25.

Dental assisting awards increased 13.2%, from 14,435 in 2019–20 to 16,340 in 2022–23.

Dental hygiene awards increased 24.7%, from 6,724 to 8,385 over the same period.

Hygiene pays more; assisting has more openings

Dental hygienist employment is projected to grow 7.0% from 2024 to 2034. The occupation has 15,300 projected annual openings.

Dental assistant employment is projected to grow 6.4% from 2024 to 2034. The occupation has 52,900 projected annual openings.

Annual openings include growth and replacement needs. They are not predicted hires for program graduates.

State outlooks vary

Hygienist growth ranges from −1.7% in Louisiana to 29.2% in Utah for 2024–34.

Assistant growth ranges from −13.3% in the Virgin Islands to 31.1% in Guam.

These results cover publisher-reported states and territories. They do not represent a uniform 50-state population.

Licensing records are widespread for both careers

CareerOneStop linked 114 license records across 52 jurisdictions to dental hygienists in its October 2024 release.

It linked 107 license records across 50 jurisdictions to dental assistants.

These are published license records, not licensed-worker counts or measures of licensing difficulty.

The records cannot establish whether a college program meets state requirements. Curriculum, board approval, and personal eligibility require separate review.

College Scorecard cannot separate the two paths cleanly

College Scorecard earnings come from their shared broader field, Dental Support Services and Allied Professions.

These figures are not separate outcomes for dental assisting and dental hygiene within the same credential level.

The available benchmark lacks a cohort year and measure-specific release date. Its earnings are excluded from the dated pay comparison.
