Which colleges and technology fields form a defensible community-college comparison?

The frame uses colleges classified as public and two-year in the same IPEDS collection cycle as their awards. Seven reporting pathways contain 14 explicit CIP 2020 fields. Public four-year and private two-year colleges remain outside the frame, and the education records did not support a comparable electronics or advanced-manufacturing series.

How did certificate and associate awards change from 2019–20 through 2024–25?

Award periods map to collection cycles one year later. Cybersecurity, information technology support, and computer science increased associate awards substantially. Networking lost associate awards despite nearly flat certificates, and web and multimedia design declined in both credentials. The latest two periods remain provisional.

How does credential mix differ by pathway, and which geographic claims survive review?

Associate degrees exceed certificates in all seven latest-period pathway totals. The corrected review preserves observed zero, unavailable, absent, and territory records. Initial state and college rankings were withheld because their certificate comparisons were not recalculated after the award-period correction.

What do Scorecard outcomes and connected occupation records add?

Scorecard coverage is too sparse and too broad for pathway-wide earnings or debt summaries. National CIP–SOC links provide possible preparation context only. Wages, projections, typical education, and two licensing connections add boundaries and contrasts without establishing placement or shortages.

What does the combined evidence establish about community-college technology pathways?

Associate degrees anchor these pathways, but the mix is not uniform

Public two-year colleges reported more associate degrees than certificates in each of the seven selected technology pathways during 2024–25. Cybersecurity, information technology support, and computer science all expanded associate awards from 2019–20. Networking moved in opposite directions by credential, and web and multimedia design declined in both.

The records support a careful comparison of reported credentials. They do not establish current catalog availability, student demand, graduate placement, or labor shortages.

The frame follows each college’s same-cycle classification

A college belongs in scope when IPEDS classified it as public and two-year in the same collection cycle as its awards. This uses sector 4 and avoids applying today’s roster to earlier years. Private two-year and public four-year colleges remain outside the frame.

The seven reporting pathways contain 14 individual CIP 2020 fields:

Reporting pathwayIncluded CIP 2020 fields
Computer and information foundations11.0101 Computer and Information Sciences, General; 11.0401 Information Science/Studies
Information technology support11.0103 Information Technology; 11.1006 Computer Support Specialist

Web and multimedia design11.0801 Web Page, Digital/Multimedia and Information Resources Design; 11.9999 Computer and Information Sciences and Support Services, Other

The last group includes an “other” field and is therefore less specific than the pathway name. The reviewed records did not support a comparable public-two-year award series for electronics or advanced-manufacturing pathways, so those subjects are not included in the education totals.

The latest period covers awards conferred from July 1, 2024, through June 30, 2025. Its provisional release was published July 21, 2026. Each period uses colleges classified as public and two-year during its matching collection cycle.

Certificates include reported awards of at least one but less than four years. Associate degrees remain separate.

Six-year endpoint changes differ by pathway and credential

Cybersecurity had the largest associate increase. Information technology support and computer science also added more than 1,000 associate awards. Three counterexamples complicate a simple growth story:

  • Networking certificates were nearly flat while associate awards fell by 723.
  • Computer science became more associate-focused: associate awards rose by 1,108 while certificates fell by 53.
  • Web and multimedia design declined in both credentials.

All 42 pathway-period credential totals were reported numerically. A reported zero would remain zero. An unavailable value or absent record would not become zero. Territory colleges remain in national public-two-year totals when they meet the same-cycle definition; state comparisons use the 50 states and DC.

State and college rankings from the initial run are not published because their certificate comparisons were calculated before the period correction and were not revalidated.

Scorecard coverage is too thin for pathway-wide outcomes

College Scorecard outcomes describe broader four-digit fields at individual colleges, while the award analysis uses narrower six-digit fields. The broader-field values must not be presented as direct outcomes for one selected pathway.

Broader field contextRelevant collegesPublished one-year earnings mediansPrivacy-hidden earnings
Cybersecurity parent field23031146
Computer science parent field1826123

The records also lack the period fields needed to verify contemporaneous public-two-year status. For those reasons, this report does not publish pathway-wide earnings or debt summaries. Medians are never summed, and privacy-hidden values are not zero.

Career evidence describes possible routes, not destinations

The national CIP-to-occupation crosswalk identifies possible preparation paths. It does not observe where graduates worked.

Annual openings include growth, exits, and transfers. They are not counts of newly created jobs. Typical entry education is a national occupation measure, not a rule followed by every employer.

The licensing source returned two exact occupation connections: a Nebraska Software Engineer record connected to Software Developers and a Puerto Rico Electronic Technicians record. Those records do not prove that a college pathway satisfies board requirements or that an individual qualifies. An absent connection does not prove that an occupation is unregulated everywhere.

The strongest common pattern is the associate degree’s central role in these public two-year technology pathways. The strongest caution is that pathway and credential trends differ enough that one national “technology pipeline” total would hide important differences.

Seven stacked bars compare certificate and associate awards. Associate awards exceed certificates in every pathway. Cybersecurity and systems administration has 1,543 certificate and 5,017 associate awards. Computer and information foundations has 865 and 5,130. The provisional data describe reported completions, not current catalog offerings.
